Integrated Programme in Management Aptitude Test

IPMAT is the widely used name for IIM Indore's Integrated Programme in Management Aptitude Test, officially written as IPM AT. It is the entrance test used by IIM Indore to shortlist domestic applicants for its five-year Integrated Programme in Management (IPM). Several other institutions may also accept the score for their own undergraduate or integrated management programmes, but they issue separate applications and selection rules.

Do not confuse this test with IIM Rohtak's independently conducted IPM Aptitude Test. The two examinations have different forms, patterns, eligibility and merit calculations. A score from one is not automatically an application to the other.

What admission through IPM AT leads to

IIM Indore's IPM is a residential five-year programme entered after Class 12. The first three years build foundations in mathematics, statistics, economics, psychology, sociology, political science, communication, humanities and management. In years four and five, students study management alongside the two-year postgraduate programme cohort. Students who complete the programme requirements receive a BA (Foundations of Management) and MBA under the dual-degree structure.

The programme includes a social internship and a business internship. IIM Indore also describes an exit option after successful completion of the first three years, subject to its academic regulations. Candidates should evaluate the full five-year curriculum and cost rather than treating IPM AT merely as another aptitude examination.

Eligibility

Eligibility is defined afresh in each admission procedure. The stable structure for domestic applicants is:

  • the candidate must have passed Class 10/SSC or equivalent;
  • the candidate must have passed Class 12/HSC or equivalent in one of the permitted recent years, or be appearing in the admission year;
  • the candidate must meet the date-of-birth cut-off stated in the procedure; SC, ST and PwD candidates receive five years' relaxation;
  • a provisionally selected appearing candidate must complete Class 12 by the specified deadline and produce the marksheet and school-leaving or migration certificate at registration.

IIM Indore calculates Class 10 and 12 percentage using the aggregate marks of all subjects shown on the marksheet, irrespective of a board's “best subjects” convention. Grade-point holders require a conversion method certified by the relevant board or competent authority. Applicants from IB/foreign-board schools should follow the equivalence and transcript requirements in the applicable notice.

The admission procedure may specify permitted Class 12 passing years and an exact birth date, so age should never be inferred only from a stated “20 years” summary. International applicants follow a separate SAT-based route and should not use the domestic IPM AT procedure.

Application process

Apply directly through IIM Indore's admissions page:

1. Read the domestic admission procedure and confirm the birth-date and Class 12 passing-year rules.

2. Register with a unique email address and mobile number.

3. Enter personal, academic and category details exactly as supported by documents.

4. Upload the prescribed photograph, signature and category/PwD documents.

5. Select test and interview city preferences if offered.

6. Pay the category-specific application fee and retain the submitted form and receipt.

7. Check application notices, admit card, answer-key/objection information and shortlist only on the official IIM Indore page and registered contact channels.

Category changes may not be permitted after submission. A correction window, when provided, can be limited to selected fields; it should not be assumed to permit correction of academic or category data.

Exam pattern

IIM Indore's IPM AT is a two-hour aptitude test with three separately timed sections:

SectionQuestion formatSection timeMarking
Quantitative AbilityMultiple choice40 minutes+4 correct, -1 wrong
Quantitative AbilityShort answer40 minutes+4 correct, no negative marking
Verbal AbilityMultiple choice40 minutes+4 correct, -1 wrong

The sections appear in a pre-specified order and each has its own time limit. Candidates cannot freely redistribute the full 120 minutes. The number of questions is not a safe evergreen field because IIM Indore can change it; use the applicable admission/admit-card notice.

Short-answer quantitative questions require the candidate to enter an answer rather than select an option. They have no negative marking, but accuracy of entry still matters. MCQs penalise wrong responses, so blind guessing has a cost.

What to prepare

The official selection document defines sections rather than a chapter-by-chapter syllabus. A practical preparation scope is:

  • Quantitative Ability: arithmetic, number properties, ratios and percentages, algebra, equations and inequalities, functions, sequences, sets, counting, probability, geometry, mensuration, coordinate geometry and data interpretation appropriate to school-level aptitude;
  • Verbal Ability: reading comprehension, vocabulary in context, grammar and usage, sentence structure, para completion, logical sequencing and verbal reasoning.

Build conceptual mathematics before shortcuts. The short-answer section rewards being able to solve without options, while MCQs require both speed and risk control. Practise each section in a strict 40-minute block. For verbal preparation, read analytically and review why wrong options fail instead of memorising isolated word lists.

A useful mock-analysis sheet records attempted, correct, incorrect and unattempted questions by section; time lost on individual problems; and errors classified as concept, calculation, interpretation or haste. Because IIM Indore requires minimum performance in every section for the interview pool, a strong verbal score cannot rescue a quantitative section below its category cut-off, or vice versa.

Cutoff: why one overall score is not enough

IIM Indore does not announce a permanent qualifying score. For each category, the Admissions Committee decides minimum raw marks in each of the three sections. Only candidates with a positive raw score and the required sectional performance enter the eligible pool for Personal Interview shortlisting.

The Aptitude Test Score (ATS) used for shortlisting is normalised within that eligible pool:

  • QA MCQ contributes 25;
  • QA short answer contributes 25;
  • Verbal Ability contributes 50.

The institute uses the minimum and maximum scores obtained in the eligible pool for the respective section in its scaling formula. Consequently, a coaching website's predicted overall cutoff is not an official guarantee. The meaningful official evidence is the category-wise sectional cutoff/shortlist notice for that admission cycle.

Selection after IPM AT

The IIM Indore process has five practical stages:

1. Application and eligibility screening. Eligible applicants are called for IPM AT.

2. Aptitude Test. The candidate must appear and meet all sectional requirements.

3. Interview shortlist. Category-wise shortlisting uses the scaled ATS.

4. Personal Interview. IIM Indore can require minimum performance across interview parameters. Missing the interview removes the candidate from selection.

5. Final merit list. The final composite score gives 65% weight to ATS and 35% to PI, followed by category-wise provisional offers under Government of India reservation rules.

An exam shortlist is therefore not an admission. After a provisional offer, follow the acceptance-fee, document-verification, withdrawal and registration instructions within their deadlines. Prepare Class 10 and 12 records, identity proof, school leaving/migration certificate and valid category/EWS/PwD documents in the prescribed format. Any eligibility mismatch can cancel a provisional offer.

Reservation and intake

IIM Indore applies the Government of India framework stated in its admission procedure: 27% for NC-OBC, 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, up to 10% for EWS and 5% for persons with benchmark disabilities. Valid Central-list/category documents from the competent authority are essential. The programme page and admission procedure state a sanctioned domestic intake of 150, but candidates should verify the applicable batch document because intake can be revised.

Institutions using IIM Indore IPM AT scores

Score acceptance can change annually. IIM Indore's official admissions page lists the institutions accepting the applicable IPM AT score, but candidates must apply to each one separately and read its programme-specific eligibility and selection formula. The official list for the referenced cycle included:

“Accepts IPM AT” does not mean the institution follows IIM Indore's 65:35 merit formula or offers the same dual degree. Check the receiving institution's application deadline, programme title, degree, interview/profile stages, fees, exit options and refund rules.

IPM AT Indore versus IIM Rohtak IPM Aptitude Test

IIM Rohtak runs its own application and test with Quantitative Ability, Logical Reasoning and Verbal Ability. Its test score, interview and academic components are governed by https://iimrohtak.ac.in/ipm-admission.php" class="inlink">IIM Rohtak's official IPM admission page. Registering for IIM Indore does not register a candidate for IIM Rohtak. Students targeting both must submit both forms and prepare for the pattern differences, including Rohtak's explicit Logical Reasoning section.

How to choose an IPM programme

Compare the actual degree and curriculum, total five-year cost, residential requirements, scholarships and loans, exit award after three years, internship structure, postgraduate-stage progression rules, batch size and placement reporting. Also consider whether you are comfortable committing to management immediately after school. A conventional bachelor's degree followed by CAT remains a different, valid route and offers a later career decision point.

On test day, carry the printed admit card and permitted original photo identification specified in the instructions, and reach the allotted centre before gate closure. Calculators, phones, watches, notes and electronic devices should be treated as prohibited unless the admit card expressly states otherwise. The admit card and official test-day notice override generic advice.

Official sources

Use the admission procedure for the batch in which you apply. Dates, fees, birth cut-offs, question counts, partner institutions and selection details are mutable.
