IISER Aptitude Test
The IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) is the national computer-based entrance examination used for undergraduate admission to the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs). The IISERs were created by the Government of India to combine classroom science with research from the undergraduate level. IAT is therefore most relevant to students who want a research-oriented education in the natural sciences, computational science, data science, economics or selected engineering fields—not simply another route to a conventional professional degree.
Admission rules, eligible school-leaving years, fees, seats and programmes can change with each admission cycle. Candidates should use this guide to understand the system, then confirm cycle-specific conditions in the https://iiseradmission.in/" class="inlink">official IISER admissions brochure and portal.
What can you study through IAT?
The core option is the five-year BS-MS dual degree offered by all seven IISERs. Students begin with broad foundational science and later move towards disciplinary or interdisciplinary specialisation and research. Depending on the IISER and admission cycle, IAT may also lead to specialised BS-MS, four-year BS and BTech programmes.
Programmes listed by the official admissions system include:
- five-year BS-MS in the natural sciences at all IISERs;
- BS-MS in Computational and Data Sciences at IISER Kolkata;
- BS in Economic Sciences at IISER Bhopal;
- BS in Economic and Statistical Sciences at IISER Tirupati; and
- BTech programmes in Chemical Engineering, Data Science and Engineering, and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at IISER Bhopal.
Programme availability and seat numbers are cycle-specific. Read the brochure for the applicable admission cycle before deciding preferences.
Who should consider IAT?
IAT is a strong fit if you enjoy asking why a result occurs, analysing evidence, working in laboratories or with mathematical/computational models, and learning more than one science before specialising. IISER education can lead to postgraduate study and research, but graduates also move into technology, analytics, scientific computing, education, consulting, intellectual-property work, public policy and research-and-development roles.
Students should compare curricula rather than selecting only by institute name. A natural-sciences BS-MS, a specialised computational programme and an engineering degree have different course structures and career pathways.
Eligibility: the points that matter
The exact permitted years of passing Class 12 or an equivalent examination are announced annually. In the official rules, a recognised Class 12 qualification or an eligible three-year diploma is used as the qualifying examination. A candidate's first declared pass year—not a later improvement attempt—normally determines the passing year for this rule.
For the general BS-MS route, candidates must ordinarily have studied at least three subjects among Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics in the qualifying examination. Mathematics in the qualifying examination is specifically required for mathematics-dependent options such as the specialised computational, economics, statistics and BTech programmes identified in the brochure.
The official brochure also specifies an aggregate qualifying-examination threshold and a relaxation for specified reserved categories. Aggregate means all subjects counted under the board's rules, not only a hand-picked set of science subjects. Because the passing-year window, marks threshold, nationality provisions and certificate dates can change, confirm each item against the brochure for the year in which you apply.
Students awaiting their qualifying-examination result may be allowed to apply, but admission remains conditional on uploading the required marksheet and satisfying the threshold by the notified deadline.
IAT exam pattern
The established IAT structure is a three-hour computer-based test covering four subjects equally:
| Subject | Questions |
|---|---|
| Biology | 15 |
| Chemistry | 15 |
| Mathematics | 15 |
| Physics | 15 |
| **Total** | **60** |
Questions are single-correct multiple-choice questions. The official marking scheme awards 4 marks for a correct answer, deducts 1 mark for an incorrect answer and gives 0 for an unanswered question, producing a maximum of 240 marks. The paper is offered in English and Hindi. Always verify the pattern in the applicable brochure in case it is revised.
All four sections contribute to the total. A PCM student cannot treat Biology as irrelevant, and a PCB student cannot ignore Mathematics without sacrificing a quarter of the available marks. However, a candidate does not need equal mastery in all four subjects to compete: a sensible plan is to maximise the three familiar subjects while building a carefully selected scoring base in the fourth.
Syllabus and level
The official brochure publishes separate syllabi for Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. The content is broadly based on higher-secondary science, but successful preparation requires application of concepts rather than memorising isolated facts.
- Biology: cell biology, plant and human physiology, genetics, evolution, ecology, biotechnology and biological diversity.
- Chemistry: physical, inorganic and organic chemistry, with calculations, concepts, reactions and structure.
- Mathematics: algebra, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, calculus, vectors, probability and related higher-secondary topics.
- Physics: mechanics, heat, waves, electricity and magnetism, optics and modern physics.
Use the syllabus printed in the applicable official brochure as the checklist. It is more authoritative than a coaching-site topic list.
Preparation strategy
Start with a diagnostic paper under timed conditions. Divide topics into strong, repairable and unfamiliar areas. Build the study plan around the marks you can realistically gain rather than spending equal time everywhere.
1. Complete the official syllabus mapping. Link every syllabus topic to school-textbook chapters and mark weak areas.
2. Strengthen concepts before speed. IAT rewards transferring knowledge to unfamiliar situations. Explain solutions in your own words and check why every wrong option fails.
3. Keep all four subjects active. Give most time to your school stream, but schedule short, regular sessions for the fourth subject.
4. Practise mixed sets. Section-only practice builds knowledge; full mixed sets build switching ability and decision-making.
5. Use negative marking intelligently. Separate confident answers, solvable-but-time-consuming questions and uncertain guesses. Do not turn partial recall into repeated one-mark losses.
6. Take full three-hour mocks. Analyse accuracy, time spent per mark and the source of every error. An error log should distinguish concept gaps, calculation mistakes, misreading and poor question selection.

Score, rank and “cutoff”
IAT does not have one permanent qualifying cutoff that guarantees admission. The examination authority prepares a rank list and may set a score threshold for awarding ranks. Receiving a rank is not the same as receiving a seat.
The effective admission closing rank changes by:
- IISER and programme;
- category and reservation status;
- preference order;
- number of seats and candidates;
- counselling round; and
- withdrawals and upgrades.
Therefore, a previous closing rank is best treated as a planning range, not a promise. Candidates should consult official round-wise closing-rank or allocation information when the admissions site publishes it. Avoid presenting a coaching portal's predicted marks as an official cutoff.
IISERs and official websites
The central counselling system covers seven IISERs. These are the institute websites students should use to compare programmes, curricula, departments, fees, hostels and campus rules:
| Institute | Official website | Main IAT-linked option |
|---|---|---|
| IISER Berhampur | [iiserbpr.ac.in](https://www.iiserbpr.ac.in/) | BS-MS |
| IISER Bhopal | [iiserb.ac.in](https://www.iiserb.ac.in/) | BS-MS, BS and BTech options |
| IISER Kolkata | [iiserkol.ac.in](https://www.iiserkol.ac.in/) | BS-MS and specialised Computational and Data Sciences option |
| IISER Mohali | [iisermohali.ac.in](https://www.iisermohali.ac.in/) | BS-MS |
| IISER Pune | [iiserpune.ac.in](https://www.iiserpune.ac.in/) | BS-MS |
| IISER Thiruvananthapuram | [iisertvm.ac.in](https://www.iisertvm.ac.in/) | BS-MS |
| IISER Tirupati | [iisertirupati.ac.in](https://www.iisertirupati.ac.in/) | BS-MS and Economic and Statistical Sciences option |
Seat matrices change. In one official recent matrix, the combined IISER intake across BS-MS, BS and BTech options exceeded 2,300 seats; candidates must use the applicable matrix rather than carrying this number into a later cycle.
Can an IAT rank be used outside IISERs?
Some admission cycles allow other institutions to use the IAT rank for particular programmes. Recent official brochures have listed options at the Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru, IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati, the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science and IIEST Shibpur.
This is not part of IISER central counselling by default. A student generally must apply for IAT and submit a separate application to the outside institution. Its subject requirements, deadlines, fees, merit rules and counselling process may differ. Confirm participation in the applicable IAT brochure and then use the institution's own admissions page:

- https://www.iitm.ac.in/academics/study-at-iitm/undergraduate-programmes" class="inlink">IIT Madras

- https://iacs.res.in/" class="inlink">Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science
- https://www.iiests.ac.in/" class="inlink">IIEST Shibpur
Do not assume that every institution on an older list will participate in a later year.
Application and documents
Registration is completed through the https://iiseradmission.in/" class="inlink">IISER admissions portal. A typical application requires personal and contact information, qualifying-examination details, category information, a photograph, signature and supporting certificates. The brochure lists the precise formats, validity dates and upload deadlines.
Check the form before final submission. Category information may not be editable after submission even when a correction window exists. Keep the registered email address and mobile number active throughout examination and counselling.
For test day, follow the hall-ticket instructions exactly. The official rules require a legible printed hall ticket and an accepted original photo identity document. Electronic devices and personal calculators are prohibited; where applicable, an on-screen calculator is provided within the test interface.
What happens after the IAT result?
An IAT score does not automatically place a candidate into counselling. Follow this sequence:
1. Download the result and check whether a rank has been awarded. Not every test-taker is necessarily placed on the rank list.
2. Register for IISER counselling within the separate window. Missing this stage can end the admission opportunity even if the exam result is strong.
3. Enter programme and institute preferences carefully. Candidates are considered only for options placed on their submitted list. Put options in genuine order of preference; do not try to predict the allocation algorithm.
4. Monitor every allocation round. Offers depend on rank, category, preferences and available seats.
5. Act before the offer deadline. To accept an offer, pay the Seat Acceptance Fee through the portal. No action or rejection normally removes the candidate from subsequent rounds.
6. Choose Freeze or Float. Freeze keeps the accepted programme and ends upgrade participation. Float retains the accepted seat while allowing consideration for a higher listed preference in later rounds; the portal may apply Float by default, so check the status.
7. Complete institute reporting and document verification. A portal offer is provisional until the allotted IISER verifies original documents and the candidate completes its admission formalities.
Keep enough programmes on the preference list to reflect acceptable choices. If all programmes on a very short list fill up, the candidate may stop being considered even without having received a seat.
How to choose preferences
Compare the actual curriculum, opportunities to enter a preferred major, undergraduate research access, location, residential costs and personal interest. If your goal is biology research, for example, examine faculty and laboratory areas rather than assuming that one general ranking answers the question. For specialised BS or BTech options, read the course structure and degree rules closely.
The safest preference order is simple: place first the programme you would choose if every option were available, then the next-best real choice, and so on. The allocation process already accounts for rank; lowering a desired programme because you think you may not receive it cannot improve your chance of that programme.
