Common Management Admission Test

Purpose: Admission screening for management programmes at AICTE-affiliated/participating institutions
CMAT is a national-level computer-based management aptitude examination. NTA invites applications, conducts the test, handles the answer-key process, declares results and provides scores. It does not conduct a common counselling or allotment process.
Candidates must apply separately to the management institutions they want to join. Each institution decides whether it accepts the relevant CMAT score, its programme eligibility, application deadline, cutoff and any GD, WAT or interview stage.
Eligibility
The verified NTA scheme requires a bachelor’s degree in any discipline. Final-year bachelor’s students whose result will be declared before the admission process begins may also apply under the bulletin conditions. The exam has no general age restriction under the verified scheme.
This is test eligibility, not automatic programme eligibility. An MBA, PGDM or specialised management programme may prescribe its own graduation marks, degree pattern, work experience or regulatory conditions.
Exam pattern
Official CMAT evidence supports a three-hour CBT with five mandatory sections:
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation | 20 | 80 |
| Logical Reasoning | 20 | 80 |
| Language Comprehension | 20 | 80 |
| General Awareness | 20 | 80 |
| Innovation and Entrepreneurship | 20 | 80 |
| **Total** | **100** | **400** |
- Correct answer: +4.
- Incorrect answer: −1.
- Unanswered question: 0.
- Medium: English.
Students should reject claims that the verified pattern is 80 questions/320 marks. NTA’s 2025 notice specified 180 minutes, and the 2026 final answer key contained 100 question IDs.
Section-wise preparation
Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation
Build arithmetic, algebra, number systems, geometry and modern-mathematics foundations. Practise percentages, ratios, averages, time-work, time-distance, profit/loss and interpretation of tables/charts. Learn to estimate when exact calculation is unnecessary.
Logical Reasoning
Prepare arrangements, series, coding, directions, blood relations, statements/conclusions, assumptions, syllogisms and analytical reasoning. Review errors by the condition misunderstood, not only by topic name.
Language Comprehension
Practise reading comprehension, vocabulary in context, grammar, sentence correction, para arrangement and verbal logic. For passages, distinguish supported inference from attractive outside knowledge.
General Awareness
Cover national and international events, economy, business, government, science, awards, sports and important institutions. Combine recent developments with static background.
Innovation and Entrepreneurship
This mandatory section distinguishes CMAT from several other management tests. Prepare entrepreneurship concepts, innovation types, startup ecosystem, business models, intellectual property, financing, government initiatives and basic enterprise management.
Application process
1. Register only through the official NTA CMAT portal.
2. Enter identity, contact and bachelor’s-degree details accurately.
3. Upload photograph, signature and applicable category/PwD documents.
4. Select permitted test-city preferences.
5. Pay the applicable examination fee and save confirmation.
6. Use the correction window only for fields NTA allows.
7. Download city intimation and admit card separately when released.
8. Verify the response sheet and provisional key during the objection window.
9. Download and preserve the final scorecard.
NTA communications rely on the registered email address and mobile number. Application fees and correction fields are cycle-specific.
Score, percentile and cutoff
CMAT result reporting may include score, percentile and rank information under the applicable NTA process. A percentile is a relative performance measure, not percentage marks.
There is no single national admission cutoff. A useful cutoff must name:
- institution and campus;
- programme;
- applicant category, where applicable;
- admission year;
- shortlist or final-selection stage.
Do not treat a coaching-site “top college percentile” as an official guarantee. Verify the programme’s own admission notice.
What happens after the result
1. Download the scorecard before portal access closes.
2. Check whether each target institution accepts that CMAT cycle.
3. Submit separate institutional applications by their deadlines.
4. Upload or enter the CMAT credentials exactly as requested.
5. Attend GD, WAT, PI or other selection stages.
6. Track independent merit lists and offers.
7. Compare curriculum, approval, fees, refund rules and verified placement outcomes.
8. Accept the chosen offer and complete document verification.
NTA does not automatically forward an admission offer and does not decide institutional cutoffs.
Choosing institutions safely
CMAT acceptance alone does not establish programme quality. Before paying an application or seat fee, verify:
- AICTE approval/affiliation or the programme’s lawful degree authority;
- exact campus and programme;
- total fees and refund policy;
- batch size;
- audited or verifiable placement report for that programme;
- internship and curriculum structure;
- hostel and living costs.
The official FAQ describes CMAT as facilitating AICTE-affiliated/participating institutions. Always recheck the institution’s current admission page.
Mock-test strategy
With 100 questions in 180 minutes and no section-wise table implying compulsory equal time, candidates should test different section orders. Begin with strong sections, protect time for calculations and avoid spending several minutes on one reasoning set.
For every mock, record attempts, correct/wrong/blank responses, net marks, time per section and losses from blind guessing. The −1 penalty means four wrong responses cancel one correct response.
CAT, CMAT and other tests
CMAT is not CAT. CAT is organised by the IIMs and is used by IIMs and registered non-IIM institutions; CMAT is conducted by NTA for management-programme screening at accepting institutions. Colleges may accept one, both or neither. Separate applications and selection policies apply.
